Every parent wants the best start for their child, especially when it comes to early development. That’s why we're excited to share Headstart Sensory Gym will open on 5th January 2026!

This new space, conveniently located in the shopping centre opposite Hersham Green, is designed to meet a growing need in our area, offering a unique, safe space where babies, toddlers, and young children can explore, learn, and grow through sensory play.

Why We Chose to Open Headstart Sensory Gym Here and Now

Young children learn best when they can engage all their senses. Sensory play supports brain development, motor skills, and emotional intelligence. Yet, many families in Hersham and nearby areas have limited access to dedicated sensory spaces that cater specifically to early childhood needs.

Our Founder saw this gap clearly. Working in the UK education and childcare sector for many years, Venus Bertenshaw recognises the need for properly qualified and trained child specialists, to be given the necessary resources and financial backing from the government, to carry out their jobs to the highest level without compromise. Unfortunately, Venus has experienced a continual decline in funding and support from the government for the educators at the frontline. As a solution, she's created her own establishment that doesn't compromise on physical and mental support - at such a crucial time in a child's learning and development journey.

Parents told us they wanted a safe, welcoming place where their little ones could develop confidence and curiosity through hands-on experiences. They wanted flexibility around their busy lives and variety in learning for their children. That’s why we've opened Headstart Sensory Gym to Hersham - and it feels like the perfect fit. The timing aligns with a growing awareness of the importance of sensory development and a community eager for new, supportive resources that perhaps nurseries can not provide beyond supervision.

Our location in the Hersham Green shopping centre was chosen for its accessibility and family-friendly surroundings. We want every parent to feel comfortable bringing their child to a space designed with care and expertise but also allow them to go about their daily or weekend routines.

What Headstart Sensory Gym Offers to Families

We focus on creating an environment where children can explore safely and joyfully. Here’s what families can expect:

Tailored sensory zones that encourage exploration of textures, sounds, lights, and movement.
Age-appropriate equipment designed to support motor skills, balance, and coordination.
Guided sessions led by trained staff who understand child development and sensory needs appropriate for the age group.
Flexible drop-in and membership options to fit busy family schedules. Please do give us at least a weeks notice so we can rearrange your sessions as necessary.
Community events and workshops for parents to learn about sensory development and how to support it at home.

For example, for toddlers we encourage physical development through guided activities that focus on improving hand-eye coordination (balancing exercises), motor skills (practicing correct pencil hold). Babies can enjoy sing-a-long sessions and tactile toys that stimulate their senses. These activities help children build neural connections that support learning and emotional well-being.
